He hadn't heard the door open, his attention was totally transfixed on the floating shadow in front of him. It wasn't the sorcerer's true form obviously, but Kaden knew enough to know that that didn't mean it was any less of a threat. The normal cocky banter he'd exchange with whoever was out to kill him that day wasn't coming to the wizard this time, probably because he didn't feel cocky. This would be like fighting Donner without ice, not a thought Kaden particularly liked.
With a heavy sigh, he unstrapped the scythe from his back. He carried it with him everywhere nowadays, and he thanked God that he did today. At the sight of him drawing his weapon, the shadow expanded a bit, as if it was puffing up in anger or something. Soon Kaden realized that it wasn't, it was charging up a blast of darkness that it fired at the wizard. Moving to the side at the last second, it crashed into the ground where he once stood. Now he broke into a full run, as blast after blast rained into the ground behind him, threateningly following him.
He made it behind a bookcase and felt as the orbs crashed into it. This bookcase is stronger than it looks. I've got to appreciate this library more. Kaden mused. He knew it wouldn't last much longer though. And he couldn't hide forever.

As Cassandra saw the entity attacking Kaden, her heart stopped, and her mind raced. "What do I do? What do i DO?" she throught frantically. Then, the answer came to her as Kaden's own words came back to her, 'I won't let anything happen to you Cassie, not while I'm alive.'
"His ice is still there, I know it is. He just has to find it." Taking a deep breath, and whispering a silent prayer, she shifted, and stepped out of the alcove. And spoke in her most sneering tone to the entity. "Is that the best you can do? Throwing shadows and creating illusions? Zane/Tristan? Those 2 clowns? That's an example of your best work? I don't know why I was ever frightened of you in the first place....you're a joke...if you were a man, I'd suggest you take viagra...."As soon as those words were out of her mouth Cassandra felt it coming at her, and shifted....or rather tried to...she was frozen in place!
The first wave hit her hard, knocking her to her knees. As she felt the second wave building she looked up....and felt a shock of recognition go through her. The entity had taken on enough of a shape that she could make out vauge features, although she could barely believe her own eyes. It was her father's chief adviser. There wasn't time to reason it all out however, as she felt the second wave building. "KADEN TORRICK! TURN THIS BASTARD INTO A SORCERER POPSICLE!" She got the words out before the second wave hit her. When it did hit her she felt as if her body had exploded into a million fragments. Pain unlike any she'd ever imagined shot through her body and she felt herself fall the rest of the way to the floor. "So this is what dying feels like," she thought to herself as everything went black.

He'd heard her voice from his spot behind the bookcase, but could hardly believe it. She could barely even move when he left her outside, but now she was....He wanted to smack himself when he figured it out. Of course, you idiot! She's a shifter! Unfortunately, he showed himself just in time to see her get hit by the first attack. His eyes went wide as he saw Cassandra drop to her knees. "No..." Kaden uttered in pained disbelief. He saw the pain on her face, in her eyes, even from where he stood. It was as if he was frozen in place, even as he saw the second wave building up in the shadow's "body".
"I....can't....It..." He struggled with himself, to no avail at first. As soon as that blast was let loose though, the wizard started to feel something he hadn't felt in what seemed like forever. Right when the blast hit Cassandra, in a split second that felt like an eternity, Kaden's eyes went completely blue. He'd lost control and the power he regained exploded, sending shards of razor-sharp ice throughout the library, somehow completely missing Cassandra's prone body. The shadow's form was riddled with the tiny needles, looking almost like it was feeling pain. Soon it dissipated.
With his eyes flashing back to their normal brown color, Kaden dropped to his hands and knees in exhaustion. Panting for a moment, he crawled over to Cassie's body. "Come on Cass, you have to wake up..." He pleaded softly.

Hearing Kaden's voice as if it were coming to her from a long, dark, tunnel, Cassandra tried to do as he asked, and wake up. She opened her eyes briefly, saw everything swimming in front of her, and closed them again weakly. "I'm dying," she thought to herself. "I need to shift." She tried, but fell back weakly. "I don't have enough juice" she thought. Realizing that she always drew her strength from Kaden, she focused all the strength she had left on just moving her right hand out to touch Kaden's body. As soon as her hand made contact with the wizard, the magic that was still pouring from his body ran through her like an electrical current, giving her the magic she needed. "I told you it was still there," she weakly whispered, right before she shifted.
The assault had taken so much out of her, that even after she shifted it took a moment for her to rise to her feet. When she did, she walked over to Kaden and began nudging him, urging him to get up as well. The thing had left....but it wasn't dead...she could still feel its hatred for her too strongly...they needed to get out of here...NOW.

Her draining off the excess magic flowing out of him sort of balanced him out. He felt somewhat normal again, but still way too tired to actually fight. Feeling her nudging him, he pushed himself back up to his feet. Wobbling a bit, he found his center and took a deep breath. "Okay Cassie, come on. Let's go." Kaden said. He felt the darkness coming together again and he knew she felt it too. Both of them heard the laughing at the same time though. The dark wizard himself came into view behind them, forgoing the shadow illusion fighting for him.

Cassandra turned around slowly, in disbelief. "He's still here!" she thought. She turned around again to ask Kaden what to do, realized she couldn't, as she was still in her animal form, and used the last bit of strenght or magic she had left, to shift again. "Kaden? What the hell do we do now?" she asked him desperately.

The sorcerer's hands pulsed with darkness. "We...uh...well, we get out of the way for right now!" Kaden said, moving practically solely on adrenaline and pulling Cassandra and himself out of the way of the oncoming blasts. Seeing black dots on the floor underneath them, the darkness in Kaden himself told him what was happening. Quickly forming a floating platform of ice underneath the pair, spikes of darkness flew up from underneath them, crashing into the underside of the platform. The ice held however. Clearing his head from the pain that caused, the wizard focused on controlling the ice to carry them as far away from the sorcerer as possible.
Soon enough, they were hiding and on the defensive again. Not a position he liked being in, but they had no choice now. "We need a real plan." Kaden whispered, trying to keep his voice down so he didn't alert their attacker. Waving his hand, the ice platform vanished underneath them, landing them on their feet again. He didn't want to take the chance of the sorcerer being able to sense it. "You need to get out and try to get help." He told Cassandra.

"Oh, I hope you have a plan B..." she began..then stopped...and thought...remembering something Merlin had said at the party they'd had the night she came back. "Kade? Help in the form of another ice wizard?" she asked him.

"That works actually." Kaden said. "But you have to wait till I give you a diversion..." He added, thinking for a second before coming up with something. "Get ready to run." With those words, he took off out of cover. The wizard was on his second wind now, letting the desire to keep Cassandra alive drive him. He immediately came under fire from dark blasts, needles, waves, anything the sorcerer could throw at him. Kaden blocked most of it with shields of ice, but some of the needles got through and embedded themselves in his legs and left arm. He winced but continued forward, his scythe at the ready.

"NO! Kad...." Cassandra tried to call him back, but it was too late, he'd already ran out and thrown himself in harm's way. "You really thought I'd leave you here?" Cassandra whispered, to herself as the wizard was already across the room. Taking her cell phone out of her pocket, she prayed for a signal, got one, and dialed Merlin.
"C'mon, C'mon answer already!" she thought impatiently. Finally she heard the ice wizard's cheerful greeting. "Merlin? It's Cassandra, and I don't have a lot of time to explain, but how does being a hero and helping to save Night World sound?"

Merlin walked through town on his way to the cafe, bored as all hell. "Something needs to happen in this town soon, or I'm going to.." he was thinking as his cell phone rang. Seeing that it was Cass calling the wizard felt his mood lift, something was always happening around her.
"What's up Cass?" he barely got the words out of his mouth when Cass started talking frantically, "Merlin? It's Cassandra, and I don't have a lot of time to explain, but how does being a hero and helping to save Night World sound?"
"Painful, but exciting," he replied thinking that she was joking. Hearing the rest of what she had to say, he realized she was for real, and in big trouble.
"Hang on Cass, I'm right outside." That was all the wizard was able to say before his cell phone went dead.
Opening the door to the library he paused for a minute, wondering where Cass and Kaden were. A minute was all it took before he didn't have to wonder anymore. He felt a raw fury swirling around him like a snake making it hard for him to focus, and pulling him towards the back of the library. Quickly putting a shield of thin ice around himself he slowly took in the scene in front of him. There was Cass looking like a refugee from hell crouched on the floor, tears pouring out of her eyes as she looked past him. Turning, he saw what was making her cry. An exhausted and badly beaten Kaden was fighting a....some damn thing, with a scythe, not ice. Turning back to Cass he raised his eyebrows in question. "What the bloody hell is going on here?" he asked in a shocked voice.

"He's out of juice Merlin. His magic just exploded out of him, and he hasn't had time to recharge, and its going to kill him if you don't do something!" Cassandra sobbed.

Kaden wasn't the only one near death, Merlin realized as he looked at Cass. He wanted to tell her to get the hell out of there so Kaden could focus all his attention on the fight. Realzing that would be a waste of energy, and he didn't have time to physically fight her and make her leave. He thought about putting up a thick shield of ice around her but rejected that idea too. She didn't have enough lifeforce left in her to withstand the cold. Raising his hands he prepared to level his ice at the dark wizard, but realized there was a chance the wizard could hurl it back, which could not only also kill Cass , but as close as the other two wizards were, it could also kill Kaden in his present state. The only thing left for him to do was to join his energy and magic with Kaden's. Knowing that this too could backfire and kill them all, it was still the only choice he had left.
"I hope she's right about how drained Kaden is, otherwise, Night World is about to head into its own ice age," he muttered to himself. Not liking the choice, but knowing it was his only one, he walked as close to Kaden as he could get and stretched his hand out as far as he could. "Dude! Grab my hand! It's our only chance!" The wizard braced himself as best he could and waited for all ice hell to break loose.

Just about resigning himself to his fate, Kaden just found himself hoping that Cassandra got out and was safe. He wasn't gonna get any closer to that dark mage without sustaining massive damage, but the last thing he expected was for Merlin to get there that quickly. Looking back at him for a while in surprise, his hesitation was more than he was allowed. The sorcerer immediately realized the immense level of sh*t he'd be in if he allowed them to touch, so he stopped being coy. In one tremendous blast, he unleashed all the dark power he had to try and kill everything in the library but him.
But Kaden didn't hesitate for long. The seemingly magnetic attraction between the ice wizards was much too strong, and he understood the severity of the situation as well as Merlin did. The enormous blast was almost upon Kaden when he reached out and grabbed Merlin's hand.
Time seemed to stop. It was happening again. Like before, there was too much power flowing into his body to control. But there was some control. There was enough to realize that if he didn't focus this energy and release it out, this entire place was going up in an eternal ice storm. Kaden's eyes went blue again and focused on the dark wizard. Still grasping Merlin's hand with his left, he extended his right hand, aimed through the sorcerer's blast at the sorcerer himself, and fired.
The dark blast was completely obliterated by the ice Kaden fired. It was like a nuclear assault, the two ice wizards' power combined, concentrated on a single target. There were peripheral effects, of course. The path the ice blast took, and almost the entire library with it, was completely frozen. Iced to the point that only those two would be able to unfreeze it. The dark mage's eyes opened wide as he was consumed by the blast.
For the second time that day, Kaden was exhausted. This time, after using power that he didn't even have. Letting go of Merlin's hand before he exploded, he stumbled back but caught himself on a large icicle that jutted up from the floor. "Wow..." Was all the wizard could say.

Merlin surveyed what Kaden had done in amazement. He'd never seen anyone harness power that wasn't their own and direct it that way.
"Wow is right, dude, but we can be amazed at our awesomeness later. We've got to get Cassie to a healer or she's not going to make it. For that matter, no offense, but you look like warmed over sh*t yourself. Looking around the wizard began to panic, he didn't see her. "Kaden, we've got to find Cass! I don't see her, and the place I left her is frozen solid.
