The wolfhound's long muzzle dipped to Jacob's face and the creature licked him from chin to hairline, lipping at the strands that trailed on his tongue. The dog grunted and backed down the human's body, skillfully missing all of his important parts.
Karis stood only a few feet from the downed man, watching him intently, ready to attack, if his words proved false. When the sound of many marching feet reached him, the wolfhound swung his head in the direction the noise came from, his semi-perked ears alert.

Slowly standing up, Jacob strapped his bow to his back to show Karis that this fight was over. He wiped some of the saliva off his face and groaned in slight disgust. Noticing that the beast's attention shifted toward the army of men at the base of the mountain, the hunter grinned. "Yeah...They're how I found you. You pissed off a pretty powerful man, it seems."
He then turned back in the direction of the cave that Karis had come from. "Fortunately for you though, I think they have a different target now."

As Jacob passed him, the giant dog let him by and then spun in place to follow. He paced along at a walk just a little behind the archer. With a pony-sized dog on his heels, Jacob didn't seem to be at all discomfited.
Below the pair and well below the cave, the troops marched along, the dog handler bringing up the rear with his boarhounds. No one wanted the boarhounds close to them and the handler hung back a good hundred yards. The dogs had been trained not for their natural prey, but had been blooded on man.
The lord of the town had some very unpleasant habits, and manhunting was one of them. The dogs were vicious and strong, owning only one master and that was their handler. His boarhounds would treat a person not as a mantrailer would; they would hunt him as if he were boar and they would kill him at the end of the trail.

Rincon looked up as the army moved on. He smirked, looking at Kyna. "Watch this," he said as he held his hand out towards the dogs. Suddenly, they stopped, as if completely frozen. "Iced them. They are completely frozen, inside, so their vital rogans aren't working right now." He smirked. "By the way, I'm Orion Rincon, an ice and water wizard. And this is my blue hair," he said, pointing. "It's a sign to tell how potent my magic is at any moment. The more intense the blue, the more potent it is."

Kyna watched Ricon's display of power, not showing any emotion on her face, though she was very impressed. She has met a lot of wizards in her travels but none like this one. She figured that while the man couldn't kill her with his power, he could sure make her miserable Kyna hated the cold. She smiled at the man, moving a little closer, "That is very impressive. Cute and talented. I'm Kyna by the way."

Reaching the mouth of the cave the other two were in, Jacob casted a backward glance at the wolfhound following him, then back at the pair in the cave. Looking at Kyna, he smirked and forked a thumb over his shoulder, pointing to the edge of the cliff. "Miss....you seem to have some company. I don't think they particularly enjoyed your choice of food down there." He said to her.

The dog padded in behind him and stood near the doorway watching the troops as they ran for cover. Once the hounds had been temporarily frozen, the jig was up; the soldiers knew that their quarry was not far.
The sergeant had been informed Karis was a shapeshifter, not a wizard. This new wrinkle in the hunt was upsetting, to say the least. With the hounds out of commission, all the troops had to rely on were themselves and their leader.
Karis saw several men break off from the main group. These scurried up the slope using the cover of the scrubby brush that clung to the scree. They advanced in a fanlike manoeuver.
He swung his head back to his companions in the cave and uttered a low whine. Introductions could be left for another, less dangerous time.

Jacob heard him and ran back to the edge of the cliff. Peeking over, he muttered a curse as he saw the poorly hidden soldiers advancing up the mountain. Glancing at the frozen dogs, he shot Rincon a look. "Oh, I just love showoffs." He drawled sarcastically. "Karis, can you get off this mountain, staying out of view of those men?" Jacob asked him.

Rincon smiled. He held both hands up, then shot them both outwards, covering a half circle of area in front of them. He then put his hands down by his sides, then thrust one out, while concentrating hard on the men he just froze. He looked up to hear men falling. He looked at the dogs again, and they, too, fell over, just like the men. "If any of you want to get pout of here, now is the time. Surely, the news of these mens' deaths will bring out more men, so now is the time to make your move."

Kyna moved over to one of the dead men. Their emotions were making her hungry again, and while she preferred her victims alive, she would settle for anything. As she bent down and bit the neck of one of the men, she realized that true to Rincon's word, they were frozen from the inside. Kyna pouted and moved back over to Ricon. "Now what did you have to do that for? I wanted one for me."

"Because, that's the only way that anything gets done. If I don't freeze them, they don't die, and they don't let us go anywhere." Rincon looked down at his handy work. "But I should be careful myself, or else I will end up found."

Karis trotted out of the cave and joined the others where they stood. He stretched his neck out sniffing towards the dead men. Suddenly, he drew back and sneezed. The smell of death bothered him.
Lower down the slope, several of the remaining troopers gathered behind a large rock.
"One of those is a wizard of some sort," a young blond man noted, "I suggest that we draw back and follow them only. The lord will send in reinforcements soon and I know that his chief mage is coming."
The others muttered a chorus of 'Sounds good,' 'I'll go with that' and 'Yes, sir.'
They drifted away from the base of the hill, leaving wary looks in their wake.
Karis perked his ears, his keen hearing picking up the sound of their boots on the scree. While he could have run them down easily, he didn't want murder on his poster as well as rape and theft. It was time to make tracks and he hoped that the others felt the same way. He knew that the lord would never stop coming after him.
