"This is wonderful," Hanvex commented as he dunked his forkful of stringbeans in what was left of the juice from his steak, "My compliments to your cook, sire."
The traveller was slim, athletically so, but the avid look he gave his almost empty plate spoke of days of deprivation. Hanvex had been on the road for several days without eating much at all. He had been in quite a hurry to leave his last lodgings.
With a becoming smile, Hanvex asked, "Could I trouble you for another slice of bread, please?"

Sam shook her head, and picked up a piece of bread. She leaned forward, and placed it on his plate.
Nathen watched this with questioning eyes. Samantha rarly dressed up, for anything... but here she was, in one of her best dresses, her hair done up, and make-up on her face. Nathen's eyes turned back to Hanvex, who was in better clothing then when he came in, yet they dont look as good as he could. Something is up... he thought to himself

Almost shyly, Hanvex thanked Samantha and ate the offering with more restraint than he had used while polishing off his dinner. Hunger could make an ass out of anyone, he thought wryly.
He soaked up every drop of gravy with the very last piece of bread, leaving the plate almost as clean as if it had been washed. As he looked up, he caught Nathen watching him and he smiled self-consciously.

Nathen gave a wry smile, and glanced back over at Samantha, who had finished her plate also, although not as well as Hanvex had. Samantha now sat politly, her hands in her lap, her back straight, and she was watching Sarah and Elizabeth, her eyes glowing with happiness. Suddenly, it dawned on Nathen. Samantha wanted children! He could see it in her eyes as she watched the child and her mother

Hanvex leaned back in his chair, blissfully unaware of any ulterior motives forming on anyone else's part. He possessed an elegance and a strength -- almost elven qualities, but it was obvious that he wasn't an elf.
Watching the baby, Hanvex found the child to be enthralling, but messy. He winced when Elizabeth picked mushy stringbeans from her blouse. The baby turned her head and caught his expression and a tiny smile lit her features. In surprise, Hanvex smiled back and the baby waved a spoon at him.

Samantha smiled when Sarah smiled at Hanvex and waved her spoon at him. But then, she sighed. She had never been able to find anyone that could love her for what she was really. A tom-boy and a stubborn person. Her father said that she got all of it from her mother, but seeing as she never got to know her mother, who had died during Sam's birth, Samantha had grown up with boys, and by the age of 9, she was able to lick any 11 to 14 year old boy who got in her way. Having Royal was a good help also.
But, alas, most men didn't want to have a wife that could beat them up if they sparred or a wife that would rather be out with the horses in the field with mud all over her clothes then be inside, taking care of her husband.
Samantha had pondered long and hard about adopting, but she never felt right when she thought about it. She had always wanted a child of her own, ever since she watched the few numbers of friends that were girls grow up and have children and families. At the age of 29, she was afraid that she would never marry, and die an old maid...

Having half-human children had never really occurred to Hanvex; he was fairly certain that he would be sterile with humans. He was already a father but his son had been taken from him long ago. He had put the possibility of others from his mind, to the point of being a little frosty to them when he came across them. Still, when the baby smiled at him, a warmth spread through his body and a longing filled his heart. He quickly doused the feeling and stared into his lap at his hands.
The serving girls brought in dessert and Hanvex looked up at the movement to catch Sam staring at him.

Nathen watched the two with curious eyes. Is this one that she could love...? he thought to himself as he took a bite of his dessert.
Samantha's eyes flicked away quickly when she saw Hanvex's eyes turn toward her. She began to buisily look into her food, and willed herself to not look up at him. It was hard, but she managed to get through about half of her dessert before looking up at him

It was some sort of cherry concoction that the maid parked in front of Hanvex. He stared at it avidly. Cherries peeked out at him from a syrupy red sauce, all poured over a creamy filling with a biscuit base. Hanvex didn't need to taste it to know that it would be wonderfully smooth and sugary. The traveller dug his spoon into the dessert.
He had managed at least three quarters of the miraculous treat when he felt watched again. This time he beheld several sets of eyes contemplating him; Samantha and her father being two. From the kitchen door, a maid and the cook peered. Hanvex laid his spoon down and checked his clothing for food. It had to be something.....

The cook and the maid quickly skirted back into the kitchen. "Who do you think he is?" the maid asked? "I haven't the faintest idea, but he is guests of the master and mistress. He seems different though..." she said softly. "More sexual..." the maid whispered, more to herself then to anyone. The cook gasped. "you know you arnt allowed to do anything with guests! Even thinking about it is against the rules." she hissed
Samantha glanced back away when Hanvex looked up, and she busied herself with her dessert once more. It was tasty, but it felt like chalk going down her throat. Nathen watched the two of them, guaging their reactions to each other. The maid then walked back in, bringing the final salad, and set it in front of all the places. Sarah cooed, and began to toss the salad leaves. "Sorry sir" Elizabeth mumbled as she began to clean it up. "No worries, Samantha was that energetic when she was a child. I'm used to it" he smiled over at Sam, who smiled back

When the maid tramped back into the dining room with yet another course, Hanvex stared. He had seldom seen such a plethora of food! In fact, he found that he needed to declare himself stuffed before he exploded.
"Umm, sir?" He began, "I hate to seem unthankful, but I'm very much afraid that I don't have a single corner of my being left to stuff any more food into. You have been more than gracious with your hospitality, but I need a little walk."
He let his eyes roam over to Samantha and hoped that she might feel as replete as he did.

Nathen nodded his head. "Yes, for a traveller, this would be to much, though it is customary for salads at the end, but its okay. You may go" his gaze flashed quickly to Sam, and then back.
Samantha looked up when she felt his eyes on her. "Father, I think i'm going to skip the salad also, and Royal and i shall go with him, to make sure none of the guards or people give him any trouble.
Nathen nodded his head. "You may go"

Hanvex pushed his chair back and stood up.
"Thank you, sir, for a wonderful meal," he nodded in Nathen's direction and put his napkin beside his very clean plate, "I hope that the next time, I can do your excellent cooks more justice."
He stepped away from the table and let his friendly smile hop from one face to another. The baby gurgled and waved a leaf of lettuce about while Elizabeth grabbed for it. Hanvex chuckled.
"I can see that you've got your work cut out for you with that one," he quipped.
The baby's eager fist flapped the leaf in her mother's face before Elizabeth managed to get hold of it. Sarah held on grimly and the leaf split down the middle, much to Elizabeth's chagrin.
The smile remained on Hanvex's face as he turned to Samantha and extended his hand, "Care to be my guide?"

Sam laughed softly as Sarah's tactics, and smiled when she looked over at Hanvex. "I would love to." she took his hand, and stood up, her dress swishing around her ankles. Over by the door, Royal stood up, and troted over to her, and stood next to her, eyeing Hanvex suspiciously. "Care to go to the courtyard?" Sam asked as she began to walk to the door, gently pulling him along by his hand
