In the night, under the full moon, the lake was as glossy black as a raven's feathers. Rillls and ripples silvered its surface and slapped wetly at the rocky shore line. Instead of scarecrow-like pines, deciduous trees like oak and maple crowded as close to the steep shore as they could. Roots hung off the rocks and some of the closest trees leaned out over the lake, as if they wished to drink of its black waters.
The moonlight picked out a ghostly form that slipped from the thick black forest. Ears a-twitch, a white wolf padded over to the lake for a drink of its cool, clean water. He crouched down to lap, but his eyes roamed the far shore watching for danger.

From behind the wolf, a girl was walking to the lake. She made no noise, but was moving relatively quickly. She was crying softly as she walked through the forest. Not noticing the tree in front of her, she slid right through it to the edge of the lake.

The splash of the girl's foot when it touched the lake startled the wolf and he jumped back from his drink to dart half-way back to the trees. Reining in his survival instincts, the wolf froze and watched the girl carefully, his nose twitching to catch the breeze with its telltale scents.
He crept along the bank slowly, his eyes flicking about and his ears alert for any stray sounds. About ten feet from the sobbing girl, he stopped. Standing like a silver statue, his coat a-glow with moonlight, he resembled a fey creature from a mystical world. His azure eyes reflected moonlight like blue lanterns.

Out of the corner of her eye the girl saw something flash past her. When she turned around to look, she saw that it was a wolf. She watched the wolf move down the bank closer to where she was. The girl had stopped crying, this to her was far more interesting.
She moved toward the wolf, sensing that it was not a true wolf, but something else. When she moved, though her feet touched the ground, they made no sound and left no prints on the bank of the lake. The girl got a foot away from the wolf and started to speak, "Hello, I'm Emilie." Her voice sounded musical. "Would you stay and talk to me? I noticed you are all alone like I am."

The wolf cocked his head at her words. The girl seemed misty and the 'splash' had been more of a feeling than an actual sound. This girl was not truly in one world or the other; her spirit was on the boundary of life and death. She was a shade.
He felt pity for her. To be neither one place nor the other was a terrible fate to befall one as young as she was. Her spirit should have crossed over to be reborn. A low whine cut the night air as he backed up, giving himself some room to study the problem.
Finally, he decided that it wouldn't be too much of a transgression if he spoke with her.
::Hello Emilie:: a wonderful and clear tenor voice sounded in her head ::I am Lycari and a wolf is never alone. I carry the memories of my pack with me whereever I go::
The white wolf sat on his haunches, his tail curled primly beside a hind leg ::Why are you a shade?::

"A shade?" Emilie answered outloud. "I have never heard that term before. All I get is, 'Ahhhh a ghost!' or some saying that there is a spirit inside their room. No one has ever spoken to me before. Even the animals of the forset seem to fear me. But oh look at me forgetting my manners." Emilie crouched down by the wolf. "It is a pleasure to make you aquaintence Lycari. Forgive me that I don't offer you my hand. I'm afraid it would do no good."
Emilie sat down on the ground next to Lycari. "It is wonderful being able to talk to someone again. I have been wandering alone for hundreds of years, ever since my cousin poisened me."

The white wolf's startling blue eyes followed her every move.
::I'm not entirely a wolf:: Lycari told her ::And I'm not all human either. I'm both and neither, you could say::
He thought well on what she had told him.
::Your cousin poisoned you? Whatever for?:: He asked.
It was very true that Lycari was more than he seemed. He was also a type of mage, with the ability to heal and to travel the Old Ways. Perhaps he could heal her state and enable her to move on, to live with the Great Hunter as all dead creatures should.

"He poisened me because he wanted to be king. You see, I was the only child and my parents made the decision that when my father could not fulfill his duties as king, I would become queen. In my time, it was unheard of for a woman to hold a position of power. It was usually passed down to the oldest born son. Since my parents had no sons, my cousin was next in line. He was unhappy with my parents decision, so the night before I became queen, he conspired with one of my ladies in waiting to put poison in my dinnertime drink. I fell ill and died that night." Emilie looked like she was about to cry again.

How the great white wolf's heart went out to the poor girl! To be betrayed by family had to be the worst fate for anyone to suffer. He wished he could rest his slim muzzle on the girl's knee and touch her hand with his cold, black nose, just to let her know that she was with someone who cared.
As it was, his tail beat lightly on the stony shore and a low whine rose from his chest.
::So you walk between worlds for eternity, all because of an unavenged death?::

At the wolf's whine, Emilie let a slight smile play over her lips. "Oh, it's not as bad as all that. It was in the beginning, and sure, it does get lonely sometimes, but I just think of everything that I was able to experience and see change. Luckily, I am not tied down to any particular area, so I can go anywhere I want to. And I can do things now that I never could. Just watch."
Emilie looked around the edge of the lake for a second, then her eyes focused on a pinkish, oval shaped rock that was about the size of a dinner plate. She closed her eyes and the rock levitated about a foot of the ground, glided slowly to where Emilie and Lycari were sitting and dropped right in front of them. Emilie opened her eyes when she heard the rock hit the ground. "I could never do that when I was alive."

Lycari cocked his head in curiousity as the rock floated onto the shore and lit at his feet. He held certain abilities himself, but levitation wasn't one of them.
::That is something few living people can do alright:: he sent agreeably ::But what ties you here, if you aren't held to one spot? Every spectre has a focus point; a place to 'haunt' so to speak, usually it is where they were wronged::

Emilie shrugged, "I don't know how I am still here. For the longest time I could only go to places around my castle and the surrounding village, but as the years went on I was able to go farther and farther away. The first time I tried to cross a body of water I thought I was dying again. I couldn't go all the way and was pulled back to the shore as soon as I tried to cross a certain point. Maybe it is because after my castle was torn down, pieces of it made it's way around the world."

The big wolf thought, his gaze distracted for a moment.
::That may be, but the destruction of your old home could have freed your spirit:: he sent ::Are you happy as you are?::

"I would be a lot happier if people would actually talk to me. A conversation like this happens very rarely for me. When I was alive, there was no lack of people to talk to, but now that I am dead people fear me." Emilie sighed. "All I know is that I am not ready to leave this world."

Amiably, the wolf thrust his large, wet nose towards her ::If you wish, you can follow me. I travel around quite a bit and would welcome the company::
If a wolf could wink, the shifter would be doing so -- one of Lycari's azure eyes was twitching ::No one bothers to think that wolf who talks to himself is crazy::
