Alledyra let her toes touch the edge of the water, as she stared out at the still reflection. No wind today, no bird singing in the branches, not even the chirp of a cricket disturbed the quiet. She let her eyes roam over the lake, so deep that she wasn't sure if she could swim down to the bottom and back on one single breath, and sighed. She hadn't been into town yet, she wasn't sure if she was ready to go back into town yet, but she was near and that was enough.
She felt older, now, than she had last time she was here...last time she'd sat on this spot. It had been only days before Kane had thought he could heal her. But he hadn't, and then he'd gone. She still wasn't sure where.
Her eyes drifted over to where the path to town began, and she sighed again. She had left without a word to anyone, and now she was back...but back to what? So many people had disappeared over the last year that she was beginning to suspect foul play, but there wasn't a culprit in sight. And she'd taken a job at the new Herbal Shop...but had probably lost it since she had left without notice. And then there was her house. Was it a home? She wasn't sure anymore. The glowing key still hung around her neck, and she knew that she could walk through the door any time she wanted to...but the last time she'd been there...Dyra shook her head. It didn't bear thinking about.
The keening music settled on her ears slowly, like a soft fog of thought, and she realized after a few seconds that it was her voice, her song, that she was singing. So high, so light, so fragile. She stopped, her eyes flickering to black at the pain of her own song, and felt her gift settle over her, like a soft black cloak. Now...now she could release it. If she wanted to. She'd found that, at least. She'd found the key to being able to control it. But it felt like a hollow victory. Like a battle that she no longer wanted to win.
Alledyra turned grey eyes towards the sky, trying to fight back tears, and realized that it was impossible. Too many where there, and she'd never be able to hold it all in. She let her voice again carry up towards the sky, a soft keening song that spoke volumes into the silence. And then, with a precision that she wouldn't have been able to achieve months ago, she began to release her hold on her gift. Slowly. Deliberately. She let her gift take in all the life around her, leaving nothing but ashes at her feet. She stood easily as gift fed her life, leaving nothing behind.
Through the forest, she walked, her voice breaking through any silence it met, both a warning and a siren call. Come here...come feed me...come give up your soul And they did come, the animals of the forest. They came to see, and then, they came to die. She found herself at her house. Only a simple place, in this world...but a magical place in the other one. Alledyra drew in her gift, drawing life from everywhere but around that simple structure. The nearest trees withered to dust, though the ones further away only blackened and died. It left her house in the center of a great ring of death...but it was the way that she wanted it. Only then did she draw her gift back to herself, as she surveyed her work. Who would dare to enter here now...where surely a wicked witch lived...only a fool...or someone wishing to die....
Alledyra turned grey eyes back towards the house, opened the unlocked door, and began to start the fire..."And now, my dears...to become the wicked witch...one must first find my tea." She cackled to herself. That was the first stage...wasn't it? Cackling? Or was it the final one. She wasn't sure anymore, and didn't really care. It was enough.
