Cassiel sat in the now familiar loft of the barn. She had a cauldron bubbling in front of her. As she added the last ingrediant, the potion stopped bubbling and started to cool. Now I wait. She thought to herself.
As she waited, Cassiel tried to remember something, anything about that horrible day. All she could remember was running to hide. Sometimes memories would resurface, but would pop as quickly as bubbles. She shook her head and got back to work.
Walking back to the cauldron, she felt that the potion was cooled. Cassiel bottled it all up to be sold or used later, but left one bottle uncorked. "Well, here goes.." she said as she sat down on a pile of blankets and drank the potion. Her eyes clouded as she leaned against the wall. Then her vision cleared....
A woman with long straight brown hair and amber eyes sat at a table writing something in a notebook. In the background several pairs of feet ran down a flight of stairs. "Momma, catch her, a young boy's voice called out from just beyond the doorway. Just then a black kitten streaked into the room. The woman, laughing, grabbed the kitten as it ran past. Surprisingly, it changed into a little girl with straight black hair and yellow-green eyes. The girl giggled as two boys appeared in the doorway. "I won again." she called out.
Two boys appeared in the doorway, a boy about seven with unruley brown hair, and one about five with straight black hair. Their cheeks were red and they too were laughing. The older boy said, "You cheated, changing forms in the middle of the game."
Suddenly the front door banged open and a man who had curly black hair came running in. "They are after us, hide the children!" he said to the woman, out of breath. Turning to the little girl he said, "Cassie darling, I want you to get the dagger and hide it with you. Whatever happens, don't come out." The woman and two boys ran to another part of the house and the little girl went in another direction.
Not long after, the woman appeared in the kitchen. "The children are..." She never finished her sentence because a group of 10 large men barged into the house "Take her," the leader said motioning to the woman. Three of the men left with the woman, who was beginning to change into a tiger. Her screams were heard from a distant room. The men came back with blood on their weapons and hands.
The leader was questioning the man "Where is it!" the leader yelled. "It's not yours" the man said, his voice now shaking. Check the house, I'll meet you back at headquarters." The leader left with the man who hald already been brutally beaten.
Day changed to night, and there was no more action in the small kitchen. All the men were gone, except for one who was left to stand guard. The children were not seen again. "One more check, then I'm leaving." The man muttered to himself. Shortly after he left, he cried out and returned with the little girl in his arms. She was clutching a small bag, but appeared to be unconscious. The man grabbed the notebook from the table, and left, setting the kitchen on fire as he went.
Cassiel woke up and gasped. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she wept for the loss of her family.
After she had spent all her tears, she sat in the loft of the barn, staring. "I had brothers. A twin I think." she whispered in disbelief. She looked at the last page of the notebook, it had the date written over the potion, "Today's date." Cassiel said, "They knew." She was in shock, and sat staring straight ahead, not even knowing how much time passed.
