"I take it that you two are travellers just as I am?"
Lycari gave the pair a pretty smile as he walked closer.
"I plan to look around a little," he told them, "Care to join me?"

"Yes!" Alohilani said quickly. "No..." Kalani mumbled under his breath, but Alohilani caught it. "Don't come then!" She said as she walked up next to Lycari.

Lycari stooped to pick up a small pack. It would fit nicely into a wolf's mouth, if he decided to shift into his alter form.
"Well, I'm heading onward," he told them, "If you want to come along, that's fine with me. If you don't.... that's alright too."
He peered into the dark depths of the forest and began to pick out a likely trail; one that wasn't too hard to follow and easy to walk. Obviously it was used much by deer and the shifter thought that it might lead to water. He was a little thirsty.

Alohilani caught up with Lycari after throwing Kalani the dirtiest of looks. "You'll have to excuse my brother." She explained, keeping pace with him, her dark hair flowing gracefully behind her. "He's a bit overprotective and can be the worst pain in the butt." She smiled and looked ahead of her, she stepped over a petruding root just in time, almost falling.
Kalani glared after his sister. "Fine," He muttered going a different direction, "I hope you get into some sort of trouble. I won't be there to save your sorry butt, and you'll wish I was." Kalani continued to mutter under his breath as he manuvered his way through the forest. It wasn't long until he reached the town and he looked back at the forest angrily, "Stupid Alohilani."

Lycari swung along the forest path, his ground-eating stride making short work of the miles. The girl kept up with him quite well and in no time the forest thinned and a large plain opened up in front of the pair.
There, nestled near a small but rocky outcropping, was a town. Smoke rose from chimneys and cattle bawled in pens. Obviously this was a thriving frontier community.
"What is this place?" The shifter asked his companion.

Alohilani stared at the town and shrugged, "I've no clue. It doesn't look all that big though does it?" She started walking towards the town.

Lycari waited only a moment before he hurried to catch up with her. The sounds and smells of human habitation got stronger the closer they got. Lycari took it all in, every single bit of information, and stored it away for future use, if needed. It wouldn't be the first -- nor would it be the last -- time he had needed to get out of a town quickly.
As soon as Alohilani and Lycari entered the main street, the locals started to stare. The shifter felt it like an itch he couldn't scratch.
"Looks like they don't get too many visitors," he quipped.

Alohilani nodded in agreement as everyone looked at her dark complextion and darker hair. She stayed closer to Lycari then she meant to, but knew that if it came to it, he would protect her just out of nature.

His whole demeanor one of false ease, Lycari strolled along, keeping himself on alert the entire time. Every citizen of the rundown and dusty little town stopped what they were doing as the pair passed. Ahead, Lycari spotted a ramshackle inn, its outer clapboard siding peeling and worn. Even from the distance, the shifter could smell good food cooking.
"Maybe we should drop in for a meal," he suggested, "Perhaps we can find out what's going on around here. I've never seen a glummer town nor a grimmer-looking people in all of my travels."

Alohilani nodded, "Sounds good to me. I haven't had anything to eat besides salted, stale jerk and water for the past month."

Seeking to break the dark mood, Lycari raised a pale eyebrow.
"All you've had to eat are jerks? And stale ones at that? While I'm not one to turn my nose up at hard fare, I _do_ draw the line at eating stupid and rude people," he sniffed, "Intelligent and classy people have much more taste."
They reached the peeling door of the inn. It squeaked open and a drunk tumbled out to lie prone in the street, right at their feet. Lycari stared at him with distaste.
"Personally, I avoid marinated meat, even if it's delivered to my very hand," the shifter gave his companion a sad look, "My constitution is delicate and I prefer to stay away from overly sauced meals."

((lol, opps typo, spose to be jerky))
Alohilani laughed, "I meant JERKY, but jerks have come across my path as well."

;D
The drunk rolled onto his chest and levered himself to his hands and knees. Lycari danced back daintily when the man reached for his white buckskin pants as a handhold.
""You're on your own, buster," he warned and stepped around the man carefully.
When he reached safety, he took Alohilani's hand and escorted her inside the creaking door and into the dark interior of the inn. Warmth soaked into his chilly skin and the aroma of a good stew hit him like a fist. Saliva filled his mouth and the shifter swallowed convulsively.
"My nose tells me that this place cooks better than it looks," he advised the girl at his side.
Other patrons swivelled their heads to take a gander at the tall, slim shifter and the lovely lady at his side. Lycari cut quite an unusual and handsome figure, with his almost ethereal coloring and warrior's gait. Even the men stared at the elegant shifter. Gallantly, Lycari drew Alohilani's hand under his arm, pulling her closer to his side.
"We appear to be the topic of conversation in here, too."
Not a single person uttered a peep.

Alohilani smirked, "Well, let's not change that," She whispered, "Do you mind following my lead?"

The beads in Lycari's hair bounced against Alohilani's head as he leaned in close to her to whisper, "At the moment, I'm pressed for ideas, so lead on!"
Even in the smoke-filled inn, the shifter's woodsy scent broke through the stink of too much ale and too many unwashed people. It was as if Lycari brought the forest with him wherever he went. He stood straight beside her, calmly studying the locals with a gimlet eye.
"I'd trust this bunch about as far as I could throw a piano," he said under his breath.
